Our local member Michael Daley (Lab) is a strong supporter of our Chamber, but was unfortunately not able to attend on this occasion.

23 February 2010 - Lunch at Pacific Square. Presentation by Chad Davis - Intenet Marketing on a Low Budget + discussion on our meeting program for the year and update on the Buy Maroubra Shop Locally Campaign.

23 December 2009 - Christmas Carols were held in the South Maroubra Shopping Village. There was live music, an early kids show, carols and more, Plus Lions Club BBQ. All under cover of a huge marquee. Starring Mental as Anything, Maroubra's own Little Pattie, Helen Zerefos, Felicia Harris, Stephen Halstead, STARS Talent School, Spablo the Clown, Jumping Castles, St.George choir & pipe band, face painting, the Snakeman of LaPerouse and of course Santa. Sponsored by Walsh's Village Pharmacy.

2 December 2009 - Christmas Gathering hosted by Rob Lees at the Maroubra Junction Hotel, 6 - 8pm.

30 October 2009 - Lunch at Pacific Square. Richard Walsh and David Shannon reported on the success of the 2009 Fun Run - see www.MaroubraFunRun.com. David also proposed an update on the BuyMaroubra campaign.

25 September 2009 - "After 5" Gathering hosted by Walsh's Pharmacy in the South Maroubra Shopping Village (enter from Meagher Ave - off Malabar Road) - commencing at 5:50 pm.

28 August 2009 - The Annual General Meeting was held at Pacific Square. The outgoing Executive Commitee was re-elected with two changes. Belinda Smith was elected as Vice President in place of Kyriacos Mavrolefteros, and Phillip Behr was elected as a member of the Committee.

31 July 2009 - Lunch at the Maroubra Junction Hotel. The topic was New Industrial Relations Law & Small Business. Geoffrey Meadows outlined how "award modernization" under Julia Gillard's Fair Work law has the potential to set pay and conditions at the level of the highest common denominator, increasing the cost of employing casual staff by around 25%. Small business could also be impacted by the new unfair dismissal regime.

26 June 2009 - Lunch at Pacific Square. Geoff Banting, Council's Director of Governance and Financial Services, provided an update on the Maroubra Beach Urban Design Review and the Randwick Economic Development Strategy. See Draft Strategy.

29 May 2009 - Members braved a cold wet windy night to attend the gathering hosted by Lia Harris of Day to Day Solutions. Useful networking and a good discussion. Thanks Lia.

24 April 2009 - Lunch at Pacific Square, Kaylene Travascus (Jobfind) led a discussion on Employment Issues & Opportunities. Richard Walsh and David Shannon reported on their meeting with our local federal MP Peter Garrett .

27 March 2009 - Lunch at Joeys. Jason Adjaka led a discussion on Business Survival. David Shannon and Richard Walsh introduced the Buy Local Campaign. David informed those present that Richard has agreed to resume the role of President until the AGM. This was endorsed by unanimous applause.

27 February 2009 - Our sandwich lunch at Pacific Square featured a police briefing on Security in Maroubra (Inspector Stephen Hodges and Crime Prevention Officer Taryn Williams, soon to be replaced by Steve Moorby). The meeting was well attended, and there was useful discussion on concerns about business and personal security and the general image of Maroubra. The issue of graffiti was raised. The police say PLEASE CALL THEM immediately you see any substantial new graffiti. 131444 or 93499214. Also call Graffiti Busters through the Randwick Council Call Centre - 1300722542.

Tracey Jackson informed the gathering of her promotion within Jobfind, and her resignation as President. Those present expressed their congratulations, and appreciation for her leadership. It was also noted that Kaylene Trevascus has resigned as Secretary, and that the Executive Committee has appointed Marilyn Jeffries to this position.

ABOUT US

The Maroubra & Districts Chamber of Commerce is one of the oldest Chambers in Australia. Over the years we have made some outstanding contributions to the local business community. We have a continuing (and so far successful) campaign opposing Randwick Council’s attempts to saturate the area with parking meters. We have monthly “gatherings” for local business networking.
